Conversion Van Camping Tips

!: Conversion Van Camping Tips

Conversion van camping doesn't give you the luxury of life in an RV, nor the discomfort of sleeping in a tent. It can be tough to safely heat a van at night, but it's cheap compared to an RV, and you can go places they cannot. We spent more than 25 nights sleeping in our conversion van last year.

Life In A Conversion Van

Make your van into something that's useable for you, especially if it's going to be your residence for days or weeks at a time. For my wife and I, this meant having space to move around. We took out the two middle seats which, I convinced Ana, would be good armchairs for the living room. Then we had enough space for dressing or cooking. The bench-seat in back folds out into a comfortable bed, so we were all set for camping.

When traveling, you need a system of organization to keep your space inside the van livable. After our first long trip, we noticed the many things we never used. We got more efficient after that. We're also able to keep the space open, despite carrying many things, by using plastic storage tubs you can buy almost anywhere. They stack well, and if you need more room at night, you can put them on the roof. They're rainproof with the lids snapped on.

Heating A Conversion Van

Camping in a van can be cold at times, as it was for us in the deserts of Arizona last winter. We started the van and cranked up the heater once in a while, but only for brief periods. The danger of carbon monoxide poisoning is just too great to leave the car running while you are sleeping.

We also cooked to heat up the van. Our propane camp stove burned very clean. Any time it was cold, it was time to cook dinner, breakfast, or tea. This heated up the van nicely. Again, because of carbon monoxide, I wouldn't recommend ever sleeping with a propane burner going. Still, sometimes a quick warm-up is all you need before you crawl under the blankets for the night.

The secret to heating a conversion van when camping is to give up. Enjoy meal time warm-ups, but unless you have electric power, I don't know of a safe way to heat a van all night. Instead, you can heat yourselves. Wear warm clothing. Bring more blankets than you think you'll need. Prepare a thermos bottle full of hot coffee each night, so it will be waitng for you in the morning. You get to warm the van when you make it, and warm up yourselves drinking it for breakfast.

Advantages Of Conversion Van Camping

Traveling and camping in a conversion van costs less than in an RV. The initial cost is a lot less if you buy used, as we did, and the cost of driving it is substantialy less. We averaged 18 miles per gallon on our last cross-country trip. Most recreational vehicles are lucky to get half of that, and they're very expensive to maintain.

Compared with tent camping, a van is much more comfortable. Even if you backpack, you are probably going to drive some kind of car to wherever you go. With a van, you can come inside if it starts to rain. If you're backpacking a long way from home, you can save on motels on the drive to and from the trailhead.

Camping can be more comfortable in an RV, but not in all ways. It's nice, for example, to park anywhere. We've taken naps in parking lots, and nobody was the wiser, thanks to tinted windows, curtains, and the inconspicuousness of a van. At a free campground in Florida we got the best spot, on a bank overlooking Lake Talquin, because our van was small enough to fit there, unlike most of the RVs.

It's great to be able to drive anywhere. In the conversion van, camping wherever we are when it gets dark is no problem. Finally, some larger RVs drag a car around because the big rig just isn't practical for daily driving. Our coversion van is a second home AND our primary vehicle for shopping or going to work. That's flexibilty.

The Altered Pet

!: The Altered Pet

I don't know whether all dogs and cats should be neutered or spayed at six months or not, otherwise where would the next generation come from? However, at some point in the lives of our friends there should come a time for this encounter.

Daniel was our family darling. Part Doberman, part German Shepherd, part Labrador, part pretty much everything else, he was strong, intelligent, loving and the king of his domain. We live in a small town near the countryside where animals, domestic and wild, roam about. Daniel was top doggie in his territory. All of the other mutts would visit him now and then. Occasionally, he would slip his collar and the whole motley crew would case the town. Daniel had a wandering way about him, especially in the springtime when a young canines fancy would turn to thoughts of, well, certainly not baseball!

Many a night my mother and I would be worried about him because he slithered off his collar again to go gallivanting all night. Inevitably, he would be on our doorstep the next morning. Although barley able to raise his head or move one paw in front or the other, he did manage to climb up the outside stairs. He would crash in front of the electric heater and sleep for two days; only intermittently rising to skim a few licks of water and gulp it down in agonizing pain!

When Daniel was eight years old we decided to get him neutered. He was becoming far too aggressive towards anyone other than the family. Experts say that in the altered male canine it should reduce aggression, reduce a wandering behavior and make him more focused on training. However, Daniel never read those statistics.

I loaded up my reluctant pooch in the van and headed out. It's amazing how they know when they are being taken to the vets! Early the next day my mother and I picked him up. We even brought a blanket along just to make it more comfy for the baby to lie down on. When we got there, he let us know in no uncertain terms that this experience was not one he would have chosen for himself. He gave us the most, "Boy, are you going to pay for this," look. As we were taking him to the van, he stopped at the vet's flowerbed to relieve himself. Two sets of patients went in and out and we were still in the same spot! He cried a river, as it were. No matter how much I pulled on him to move, he stayed firm on three legs! The flowerbed is now a rock garden.

Finally, we got him into the van and up the stairs. He pretty much ignored us for the rest of the day. That night my mother got up to go to the bathroom and felt something squishy under her toes. She turned on the light and to her horror she saw chicken skins, bones, and sundry soggy items all over the kitchen floor! The following morning she told me about it. When we brought Daniel in to show him what had been done, all he did was give us a glare that said, "That's what I think about what you had done to me! Live with it!"

Daniel was somewhat less aggressive afterwards. His wandering didn't slow down though and he never did get a focus on training. Getting neutered at six months seems a little too early for me, but at eight years old? It's no dog and pony show!

Cool Coffee Shops in Austin Texas

!: Cool Coffee Shops in Austin Texas

Austin has been known for its individuality for decades. Though the chain stores and restaurants are slowly creeping their way in from the edges of Austin's sprawl, still many independently owned shops blanket the heart of the city. Coffee shops in Austin truly capture the essence of what the city is known for- a friendly, laid back atmosphere, where one can feel a sense of community by joining their friends or making some new ones.

As Austin is a college town, coffee businesses thrive around the university, keeping students alert while cramming for upcoming exams. Though Quackenbush's held court on the Drag directly across from UT, they relocated with a slight reincarnation in the heart of Hyde Park with Quack's 43rd Street Bakery. Hyde Park is home to a large student population who enjoy not only the delightful coffee, but Quack's large lineup of desserts and baked goods, which can be found distributed to other shops without an in-house bakery.

Spider House also plays host to students from an old renovated house overlooking Hemphill park, just north of campus. Though the inside is very cozy, the large outside decks of the Spider House see a lot of action, especially in the evenings when live DJs and bands play nightly, and the cheap drinks and free movie screenings only add to their popularity.

Though Little City just closed its campus location, its downtown location is going strong. Located on Congress Avenue, Little City is the obvious coffee shop choice for those who prefer a little local flavor to that of Starbucks (which is located directly across the street). Little City serves up a wide variety of coffee drinks, and over 15 whole bean blends from around the world, and if the diner is lucky, certain nights they serve up low priced entrée and wine combinations with some good people watching from inside the shop or a small sidewalk table.

South of Little City, in the middle of the Second Street District, lies Austin Java's third store location on the first floor of City Hall. Austin Java beat out 25 other local establishments vying for the slot, with its wide variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner options- definitely a standout in the coffee shop business, when food options can be limited to a muffin or prepackaged breakfast taco.

South Austin is the heart and soul of the coffee house community. Bouldin Creek Coffeehouse promotes togetherness and a place for community action and people watching, like their website says it was, "in the prefranchise days." They offer an all vegetarian menu to accompany a cup of joe, and several nooks to gather or seclude, both inside and out, just off the banks of the creek.

As the coffee shop of the swanky San Jose Hotel on South Congress, Jo's Coffee offers more than the coffee drinks and sweets available from the open air stand. The Rock N Reel happens every Thursday evening, with a themed pairing of music and movies, and Sundays bring the Sinners' Brunch with live music and South Austin Speedballs, a three dollar longneck beer and coffee combo.

Further down South Congress lies Ruta Maya, possibly the king of the coffee houses. Housed in one of the repurposed World War I aviation buildings, Ruta Maya seems sprawling compared to other shops. The space is needed however, as Ruta Maya is upholding the old tradition of the coffee shop as the "Penny University"- a common area where, for the price of a cup of coffee, one could be educated by other customers with experienced backgrounds. Today, for the price of a cup of coffee (now more than a penny), Ruta Maya offers yoga, tai chi, environmental awareness classes, and a single parent resource network, allowing Austinites to come together, enjoy each others' company, and keep the bonds of the community strong.

Electric Blankets: The Warmest Solution

!: Electric Blankets: The Warmest Solution

Despite the reasonably adjusted thermostat in my best friend's house, his room always seemed to be colder than anywhere else in the home. I visited him several times in the winter and finally I asked "How can you stand sleeping in here at night?"

My friend told me that he had an electric blanket that adjusted to the exact temperature he wanted to be, so it did not matter how cold his room got at night--he could always sleep toasty war. His electric blanket was a lifesaver for him that winter, considering that he and his other roommates could not afford to crank the thermostat temp up any higher. My friend showed my how it worked. Just plug it in and there is a dial to set the heat levels.

I never noticed the electric blanket in his room before, I guess this is best possible condition I thought that electric blankets would stand out in a room--I thought a good electric blanket would probably be ugly and stand out. However, my friend's electric blanket was the same shade of green as the rest of his bedding--it was a dark, velvety material and folded nicely at the end of his bed.

Now, you must be thinking that electric blankets cost a fortune. However, you might be pleasantly surprised at the cost of electric blankets if you look in the right places. Lots of deals are offered online for reasonable prices. And sometimes you will even find the great prices you are looking for and save money compared to what you expected to pay for your electric blanket.

Either way you look at it, you will be saving lots of money by purchasing electric blankets, because you will not have to turn up the heat at night on the thermostat--and that will reduce your gas bill. Considering the high prices of gas lately, electric blankets are likely to become even more popular when the cold comes back on us fiercely this winter season.

Well, being someone who gets cold often, I sought out my own electric blanket, it was inexpensive and it is beautiful. A lovely burgundy rose pattern that matches my winter quilt. I have found no better solution anywhere else to my persistent nighttime chills--in fact, I have slept soundly and comfortably through the cold nights ever since I first bought my electric blanket.

Cat behavior and its, my heating pad

!: Cat behavior and its, my heating pad

I had a friend sitting cat, then we went to California, and according to the instructions I successfully left on Sid, the cat is that he likes sleeping on my heating pad. If they put it on the rocking chair will rise up and take a nap. She thought I was crazy, yeah, this cat is to know what a heating pad, turn right at the jump. Well, to his surprise, that's exactly what Sid did. He loves his blue carpet heating at low level. Put it in myrocking chair and the chair is his. It will even try to stifle a bit of me when I try to divert the track. I win this battle, but he loves so much, sometimes it's just not worth it, I just sit somewhere else.

During the first week as a cat and our dog, we lost Sid showed him hours later in a sleeping bag in our basement. The cats love the heat. They should be examined closely. You might well find

Too near a radiator Explored in a sleeping bag On a heating pad that is too hot Under an electric blanket Spawled in a sunbeam coming through the window

Normally, the heating pad on my bed, back on a low temperature setting, but if I do not think Sid during the day, I can be sure it reaches the road. We even three different heating pads on a point to help meet the love of Sid's heating pad, but one of them died while we have to 2.

He knows even if it is enabled. He can tell if the lightis activated. If you try to seduce him to get in the way secular, if I show him the light on the panel, it changes immediately.

We bought a cat heating pad natural and there is an opportunity I was, but not very often. If he goes into one's own heat produces additional heat. It can lay an hour or two a month if it is not the Case near the warmth of his journey from the beloved blue light and love.

The safest place for your cat safe and warm in your armsor on your lap.
